What Are The Differences Between Silicone and Saline?

Appearance

Silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants due to their teardrop shape and gel consistency. Saline implants are round and, although they do not look as natural as regular breasts, they are popular choices for women due to the striking physique they create. 

Dr. Ravi uses only IDEAL IMPLANT® for saline implant procedures. The IDEAL IMPLANT is a hybrid of silicone and saline. It is an “ideal” choice if you want a breast lift and augmentation. 

Potential Health Risks

Implants can rupture. An IDEAL IMPLANT consists of sterilized water and salt. Should it rupture, there are no known health risks. In fact, a 2017 survey reported that 91% of the women polled would prefer saline implants to rupture inside of their breasts instead of silicone implants.

Silicone implants have a gel interior. These implants aren’t known to cause health problems. However, if a silicone implant ruptures, you’re likely to feel breast pain and see breast thickening.

Repair Necessity

When a silicone implant ruptures, surgery is usually necessary. You will require surgery if the rupture causes breast deformity or thickening. However, surgery is not standard for a ruptured IDEAL IMPLANT. Instead, the solution safely absorbs into your body.

Breast augmentation can improve the breasts’ size, shape, and symmetry. Consistently one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, several different techniques, options, and approaches can influence its cost.

• Keller Funnel® Implant Insertion. Breast implant insertion with the Keller Funnel allows for a “No-Touch Techniques” along with a much smaller incision versus a traditional technique. By using this specialized funnel, the implants never come in contact with the patient’s skin or the gloves of the surgeon. This not only decrease the risks of infection but also is the least traumatic insertion. There have also been studies that indicate the use of the Keller Funnel also minimizes the chances of capsular contracture, which is internal scarring.

• Exparel® Non-Opioid Analgesic. Dr. Ravi injects Exparel, a local long-acting anesthetic, directly into breast tissue to decrease postoperative discomfort for up to 72 hours. The use of this has allowed our patients to reduce the need for narcotic pain medications following breast augmentation. Exparel® allows for a shorter recovery period as well, with many women able to return to work after three to four days

Breast Implant Placement

Dr. Ravi uses FDA-approved breast implants for all augmentation procedures. These can be inserted over or under the muscles in the chest, depending on factors, such as how much breast tissue is present, that are unique to the patient. Where implants are inserted can influence the length of surgery and may have a negligible impact on breast augmentation costs.

We offer both silicone and saline round breast implants to ensure optimal personalization. The types of breast implant selected will also have an impact on the total cost of your procedure. 

Silicone implants that Dr. Ravi chooses to work with are the full line Allergan Natrelle Gel Implants. These include the responsive, soft touch and cohesive gel implants. Costs do vary with these.
