Breast Augmentation in Houston, TX

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed around the world. Through the use of either silicone or saline implants, breast augmentation can create shapely, contoured breasts that complement the body’s proportions. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and the normal aging process can all cause breasts to deflate. Implants will restore lost volume in the chest, helping a woman to reclaim a youthful, feminine appearance. Whether you are looking for a subtle change or dramatic improvements, the breast augmentation procedure at Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics will provide long-lasting aesthetic results, custom-tailored to your individual needs.

“Understanding a woman’s body and her proportions is the key to achieving the most natural-appearing breast augmentations. By taking precise measurements, I am able to more accurately determine the size, projection, and placement to give you your best results. Careful attention to detail is the cornerstone for excellence, and it goes way beyond just placing implants to enlarge breast size.”
– Dr. Ravi Somayazula

Reasons for Breast Augmentation:

Augmentation mammaplasty, more often referred to as a breast augmentation, is a safe, trusted procedure using implants to shape the breasts. Every year, more than 300,000 women will decide to move forward with their own breast augmentation. The reasons for this extremely personal choice are extensive. Some women have struggled with small or underdeveloped breasts (breast hypoplasia) their whole life, while others experience changes in their chest after childbirth (postpartum glandular hypomastia) or weight fluctuations.

A breast augmentation can provide many benefits to patients, including:
  • Correct asymmetry
  • Restore volume loss
  • Increase breast size
  • Create fuller, shapelier breasts
  • Extend the projection of the chest
  • Plump up cleavage

“I had a really great experience with Dr. Ravi. I had a breast augmentation, and could not be happier with the results! He is great, his office staff is great, and they all made me feel very comfortable. Dr. Ravi answered every question that I had, and is clearly very knowledgeable about this particular procedure. He made great recommendations, based on what I told him I hoped to accomplish, and my results are fantastic!”
– Elizabeth Y., Houston, TX

No matter the reason, one thing all of these women have in common is the desire to increase the size of their breasts, creating a natural-looking chest, proportionate to their body type. As the procedure dramatically improves how a woman looks in clothing, better filling out blouses and swimwear, a breast augmentation can dramatically increase self-esteem. Any woman considering the option of breast augmentation is encouraged to schedule a confidential consultation with Dr. Ravi, where he can fully explain the benefits and limitations of the procedure.

Understanding the importance of open communication between patient and surgeon, Dr. Ravi spends a great deal of time getting to know each woman before her surgery. Emphasis on the consultation process allows Dr. Ravi to better understand the patient’s unique needs, desires, and lifestyle. Patients are thrilled to find that Dr. Ravi is personable and a relatable surgeon, who does not push women to rush into any decisions about their body. His goal is to work diligently and consistently, ensuring his patients receive the most satisfying results. At the client’s own pace, the professional team at Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics will work to create a breast augmentation treatment plan designed around her individual aesthetic goals.

The Ideal Breast Augmentation Candidate:

Almost any woman who is seeking larger, more proportionate breasts, may make a good candidate for surgical enhancement. The ideal breast augmentation candidate will be over 18, in generally good health, and hold reasonable expectations for her final results. Potential patients should understand the breast augmentation process and the recovery requirements. She should be a nonsmoker, or willing to give up all smoking and nicotine for at least four weeks before and four weeks after her surgery. To determine if breast augmentation is right for you, a confidential consultation will be arranged at Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics.

The Breast Augmentation Consultation:

The initial consultation appointment provides valuable time for you to get to know Dr. Ravi and learn more about the breast augmentation process. Please set aside an hour to an hour and a half for your thorough consultation. We want to use this opportunity to get to know you, learning more about your concerns and aesthetic goals, while at the same time, helping you feel relaxed and comfortable in our beautiful office.

During the consultation, Dr. Ravi will take a thorough medical history, discussing any current medications and health issues. Next, Dr. Ravi will perform a physical examination, evaluating your breast size, shape, tissue quality and characteristics, and symmetry. Although the measurements of each breast may be similar, many times, each side of the chest will be slightly different. This information will help Dr. Ravi to create a realistic outline of the potential breast augmentation results. Dr. Ravi will use these specific measurements, combined with your overall proportions and individual aesthetic desires to recommend the best style, shape, size implant for your unique body, along with the desired implant projection and placement.

Finally, Dr. Ravi will show multiple before and after photographs of his recent breast augmentation patients, then provide the opportunity to try on implant sizers. Once you have had a chance to see and feel actual implants, Dr. Ravi will have you try on the sizers under a non-padded bra and tight shirt. This allows the patient to better visualize the potential changes, evaluating the new shape and dimensions of the figure.

After any remaining questions have been answered, Dr. Ravi will determine if a breast augmentation is the right procedure for the individual patient. Your goals will help determine whether your breast augmentation should be combined with other procedures such as a breast lift or breast augmentation with fat transfer,  Every woman has her own set of unique goals, so Dr. Ravi will create a personalized breast augmentation treatment plan, reflecting an individualized surgical approach, including the incision site and positioning. In some cases, Dr. Ravi may recommend a mammogram prior to the breast augmentation, to use as a baseline for future exams. At this time, the exact price of surgery will be determined, and a patient coordinator will review the payment options.

Breast Implant Options:

Every woman is built differently, meaning the implant that looks proportionate on one woman will not necessarily be ideal for another. Dr. Ravi will take into consideration each woman’s height, weight, exact chest measurements, skin characteristics and the amount of existing breast tissue before recommending a particular implant. He will also take into account her age and lifestyle. Dr. Ravi only uses FDA-approved implants from Allergan, the maker of Natrelle gel implants. These modern implants come in a variety of styles, meaning every patient will have personalized results. Common implant options during the breast augmentation process include:

Silicone vs. Saline Implants:

Silicone implants are the most popular choice today. A safe and natural-looking option, silicone implants have a lower deflation rate than saline implants. Prefilled with a soft silicone gel, the results achieved with silicone implants look and feel more like natural breasts. Silicone implants have a lower rupture rate versus saline implants.  If there is a tear in the outer shell, due to the nature of these cohesive gel silicone implants, the material will stay within the implant.

Saline implants provide firmer, rounder breasts that may look less natural than silicone. Made with an outer silicone shell, saline implants are filled with a salt-water solution after being positioned on the chest. This means a smaller incision. While leakage is not common, it is easier to detect in saline implants. However, rippling can be more common in saline implants.

Over the Muscle or Under the Muscle Placement:

Subglandular placement of implants, which is over the chest muscle, will provide a rounder, more-natural look to the chest. This placement typically requires a larger amount of natural breast tissue to be present prior to the augmentation procedure. Subglandular placement can mean a slightly higher chance for rippling, but can be used to improve the position of slightly droopy breasts.

Submuscular placement, under the pectoralis major muscle, provides excellent upper pole fullness, with a contoured shape above the nipple. While submuscular placement is great for women with little natural breast tissue, there is an increased chance for animation distortion, or changes in breast shape with certain movements. These implants may be harder to feel when under the muscle, but can provide better images during mammography.

Volume, Shape, and Texture:

The volume of an implant is measured using CCs; never cup size. A large variety of CCs are available in each type of implant. The use of implant sizers can be a helpful tool for women to visualize how each CC implant will look on her body, allowing her to choose the right volume for her physical proportions.

Breast implants come in both round and anatomic, or teardrop shapes. Round implants are the most popular choice today and provide a desirable, organic shape to the breast. The teardrop shaped implants are excellent for contouring the chest when little breast tissue is present, especially during breast reconstruction. However, anatomical implants can rotate in the breast pocket, taking away from the natural appearance.

Finally, women will be given the option of smooth or textured implants. Smooth are most popular, as they move easily within the breast pocket. Textured implants were once thought to eliminate the chance of capsular contracture, although this has not been found to be the case. However, textured implants may be the recommended choice if this is a secondary breast augmentation.

Your Breast Augmentation Pre-Op Appointment:

Every woman who chooses to have a breast augmentation with Dr. Ravi will have a pre-op appointment scheduled approximately two weeks before surgery. During this visit, pre-operative pictures will be taken. A detailed information packet will be provided and Dr. Ravi will discuss the specific instructions for before and after the upcoming breast augmentation surgery, including a complete list of ‘dos and don’ts for recovery. Prescriptions for an antibiotic, pain, and anti-nausea medications will be written, giving the patient ample time to fill before surgery. Any last minute questions and concerns will be addressed, and all surgical consent forms will be signed.

To prepare for the breast augmentation, Dr. Ravi suggests patients stop taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as Ibuprofen, at least one week before and one week after surgery. This will help to prevent unexpected bleeding and excessive bruising. Women should stop taking any herbs or supplements at this time, as well, as these may cause a delay in the healing process. To prevent complications, smoking must cease for at least four weeks before and four weeks after surgery.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure:

Dr. Ravi performs all his breast augmentation procedures as outpatient surgery, at an accredited surgical center or hospital, using a board-certified anesthesiologist and the most innovative, state-of-the-art technology available. Patients are at home resting the same day. Performed under general anesthesia, the patient will need a ride home from the surgical center. Depending on the individual and the technique performed, the breast augmentation procedure will normally take from one to two hours.

To begin, Dr. Ravi will create a predetermined incision along the breast. Most commonly, the incision will be made across the breast crease (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or under the arm (axillary). Through this incision, he will then place the implants. Silicone implants are prefilled, however saline implants are positioned prior to being filled with the saline solution. After the implants are in their desired location, Dr. Ravi sutures the incision and put a compression garment in place for proper healing.

Due to his gentle, precise approach to breast augmentation, Dr. Ravi’s patients are known for having a smoother and shorter recovery period, compared with traditional procedures. His technique also ensures the smallest scar possible. Over his career, Dr. Ravi has implemented his own set of cutting-edge techniques for patient safety and maximum comfort. These include:

Keller Funnel® Implant Insertion:

The Keller Funnel® is an innovative tool that can be utilized during the insertion of silicone implants. While not all doctors choose to use this technique, Dr. Ravi finds that using the Keller Funnel® has multiple valuable benefits, including:
  • A smaller incision can be made even when placing a large, silicone implant. This means a smaller scar compared to an identical breast augmentation without the use of the Keller Funnel®.
  • Known for its “No-Touch” technique, this minimizes infection rates and lowers the incidence of capsular contracture (internal scar tissue). The Keller Funnel® prevents the implant from coming into contact with the skin, allowing the integrity of the implant to remain protected.
  • Less pain during recovery, as the silicone implant is placed with less stress or trauma to the surrounding tissue.

Minimal Breast Scarring:

Dr. Ravi takes meticulous care in planning the final results of each breast augmentation procedure. Prior to surgery, he will measure and locate the exact position of the surgical scar, based on the individual’s unique anatomy, ensuring the resulting scar will be well-concealed within the natural breast fold.

Taking extra time in the operating room, Dr. Ravi performs electrocautery of the blood vessels, as he makes the breast pockets for the implants. Many other surgeons choose the faster, more simple method of blunt bloody dissection. While easier for the doctor, the dissection technique results in increased bleeding, bruising, and post-op pain. Dr. Ravi’s slow and meticulous methodology means a faster healing process with fewer complications.

Exparel® for Rapid Healing and Comfort:

Dr. Ravi will prescribe the necessary post-procedure oral pain medications for a comfortable breast augmentation recovery. However, to ensure maximum comfort, he will directly inject Exparel® (a local anesthetic) into the breast tissue during the augmentation procedure. Applying this local anesthetic dramatically decreases the need for pain medications after surgery, so that Dr. Ravi’s patients can recover with less stress and improving the overall healing time. Most women are able to return to work in just two to three days after their breast augmentation, although every patient’s recovery is different.

Getting Back to Normal After Your Breast Augmentation:

Women can expect their breast augmentation recovery to take about a week. Patients will be able to walk immediately after surgery and perform many routine activities by the following day. Subglandular placement, over the muscle, is generally a faster recovery and may take only a couple of days. Submuscular placement, under the muscle, may require a few extra days of rest. Either way, most patients are feeling good enough to return to work or school in a week or less. Heavy lifting, strenuous activities, and vigorous exercise should be postponed for three to six weeks.

For the first 24 hours, Dr. Ravi suggests having assistance with a responsible adult, who can provide any needed help. Women may experience mild to moderate discomfort and tightness across the chest over the first week. Dr. Ravi will prescribe the necessary medications for a comfortable recovery. The Exparel® injections, placed along the incisions during surgery, will help to decrease the pain for up to three days. Bruising and tenderness are common, but generally diminish over the first seven to ten days. The majority of the swelling will resolve over the first several weeks, however residual swelling can remain for six months or longer. A compression garment will need to be worn for the first few weeks, reducing the incidence of swelling, and ensuring the implants move into their desired location on the chest.

Dr. Ravi’s Breast Augmentation Results:

At first, new breast implants may sit high on the chest, but as the weeks go by, they will settle on the chest. As the residual swelling resolves and the implants move into the breast pocket, they will take on their desired natural appearance. Modern breast implants are designed to last for years to come, and can easily remain safe and shapely for a decade or longer. Together with Dr. Ravi, patients can safely choose to have a revision augmentation should they want to update their appearance with new implants in the future.

Breast augmentation is considered a safe and effective procedure, especially when performed by an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ravi. As the procedure is invasive, there is always a small chance for complications to occur. Unexpected bleeding, bruising, infection, capsular contracture, rippling, loss of nipple sensation, leakage, rupture, and asymmetry are rare, but can occur. During the consultation appointment, Dr. Ravi will further discuss the potential complications associated with breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation FAQ:

  • What is a breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation refers to the use of implants, either saline or silicone, placed in the breast to create the desired volume, shape, and improve the symmetry of the chest. Dr. Ravi’s unique breast augmentation procedure can create a more proportionate chest, restoring a feminine and curvaceous figure.
  • Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation?
Almost any woman who is looking to improve the shape or size of her chest may be a potential candidate for the breast augmentation procedure. An ideal candidate will be over 18, with fully matured breasts, and in overall good health. Potential patients should have a full understanding of the surgical process and hold realistic expectations for the final results.
  • How long does Dr. Ravi’s breast augmentation procedure take to perform?
The length of a breast augmentation will vary according to the individual patient and the technique used. The procedure is normally performed as outpatient surgery, taking from one to two hours.
  • When can I return to work after my breast augmentation procedure?
While the recovery from a breast augmentation takes approximately one week, most women are feeling good enough to return to work or school in three to five days.
  • What are the potential complications after a breast augmentation procedure?
Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure. Today’s techniques are safer and more efficient than ever before, however, as invasive surgery, there is always a small chance for complications. Risks include infection, excessive bleeding, capsular contracture, asymmetry, and loss of nipple sensation.
  • How can I prepare for my breast augmentation procedure?

Preparing in advance for your breast augmentation procedure is a great way to increase your chances of a smooth, complication-free surgery and recovery. Getting ready for a breast augmentation may take several months in advance. Before arriving at your procedure, consider doing the following for optimal results:

    • Visit your primary doctor to discuss which medications to stop or adjust, as they may interfere with your surgery
    • Quit smoking at least six weeks before your procedure
    • Avoiding taking anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning medications
    • Begin a balanced diet that gives your body the proper amount of protein, fat, and nutrients
    • Establish a light exercise routine you can stick to
    • Prepare your home for easy mobility
    • Invest in loose clothing that makes it easy for you to wear and change clothes
    • Arrange transportation with a loved one
  • How can I ensure a successful recovery from my breast augmentation?

Recovering from a breast augmentation is not a walk in the park. However, it is not impossible. With the right preparation and support, patients can successfully recover from their breast augmentation surgeries without any complications. To help encourage an easier recovery process, do the following:

    • Plan for assistance. Many patients can feel shy or guilty about asking for help while they recover, but doing so can help you avoid potential injury and risk.
    • Monitor and manage your pain. Dr. Ravi will provide patients with aftercare guidelines on how to manage their pain. If you notice your pain does not improve or gets worse, this can be a sign you need professional attention. Catching these complications early on will help prevent major issues later.
    • Prioritize rest. Many patients don’t realize the importance of resting during recovery. Resting allows your body to recuperate from surgery.
    • Eat foods that are nutritious and energizing.
    • Slowly re-introduce your body to light activities. Slow, short walks and light exercise can help get your arm and shoulder mobility back to normal.
