Ideal Candidates
Ideal Facelift candidates are healthy adult men and women who are experiencing significant signs of aging, including smile lines, double chin, loose jowls, fine lines, and wrinkles. First-time Facelift patients have no minimum or maximum age requirement. Patients, even in their 20s, are seen for a consultation and if found to be a good candidate for a Facelift then they would be offered this surgery. A second Facelift may be performed in 10-15 years to maintain healthy, youthful skin.
Our team evaluates potential facelift candidates during a private consultation. Our team also performs a full skin analysis and creates a treatment plan for skin texture and tone optimization and rejuvenation, plus the addition of injectables.
The Facelift Procedure
Our team specializes in the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS Facelift), which provides long-lasting, outstanding results. They perform SMAS Facelift surgery using general or local anesthetic during an outpatient procedure at the accredited Houston Plastic Surgery Center, connected to the Body By Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics office in Houston, Texas. During the SMAS Facelift procedure, our team creates inconspicuous incisions that are hidden inside and along the earlobe fold, behind the ear, and extending into the hairline.
During the procedure, our team separates the skin from the thin layer of fibers covering the anterior face and neck, known as the SMAS system. After lifting the skin, our team trims the tissue and fibers below the face and attaches the muscles at an elevated level for tighter, lifted facial muscles. Our team uses the SMAS technique to lift sagging cheeks, remove jowls and heavy skin from along the jawline, tighten the underlying tissue and muscle, correct mid-face sagging, sculpt a double chin, and smooth marionette lines, folds, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Our team may also remove unwanted pockets of fat from the face for contouring or add harvested fat for definition. She uses fat that is harvested from the abdomen using liposuction, which is then purified and injected into the face using a microdroplet technique to achieve a more youthful appearance. The fat transfer is typically very successful, and 75% to 80% of the injected fat will permanently remain.
The surgeon may also create an additional incision under the chin if the patient wants to improve a double chin, remove excess, saggy skin from the lower face, or enhance the appearance of their neck. Necklift procedures are usually combined with Facelift procedures in order to achieve harmony between the face and neck for a cohesive and comprehensive rejuvenated appearance. The Facelift procedure usually takes two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. Our team places sutures within the SMAS layers to hold the transformation in place and adds temporary drains.
Recovery Process
Our patients typically return home the same day shortly after their Facelift procedure to rest and recover. We advise patients to set up their recovery area before surgery with all the items that they will need. The patient must keep their head elevated and apply ice at appropriate intervals to reduce swelling and encourage healing.
The patient typically returns the following day to have the drains removed. The extent of the surgery determines the length and nature of the recovery. Most patients have a close family member or friend stay with them for a few days to assist them during their early recovery.
Our team wraps a surgical dressing around the face after the surgery, and a compression garment is typically worn by the patient for 7 to 10 days after the surgery. Stitches are usually removed in one week, and the patient may experience some swelling and unusual skin sensations for up to one year after the surgery. Swelling typically improves after 1-2 weeks.
Our team prescribes medication to reduce the risk of side effects, which can include pain medication, antibiotics, and anti-nausea medicine. The bruising begins to fade within the first few days and disappears in approximately two to three weeks. Patients may resume their regular activities within a week if approved by our team, minus strenuous physical exercise.
Facelift patients are encouraged to contact the staff at Body by Ravi at any time during their recovery to ask questions or discuss concerns. Most patients are comfortable returning to public events approximately two weeks after the surgery.
Risks
There are risks associated with any surgery, but when facelift surgery is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, the side effects and dangers associated with SMAS facelift surgery are significantly reduced. Although SMAS complications and adverse events are rare, facelift risks may include:
