Not a lot of people know that both BOTOX® and Dysport® can be injected into the jaw muscles to slim the appearance of your face. It may be the right decision for a number of patients. We have a set of muscles on either side of our jaw called the masseters. These thick muscles are used for chewing. Unfortunately, they can become thickened and hypertrophied if you grind your teeth at night, have TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorder, chew excessive gum or clench your jaw with stress.
A well-known person that has recently made headlines for her new face shape is the found of Skinnygirl, Bethenny Frankel. If you’re a fan of the Real Housewives of New York, you know this outspoken New Yorker had a very defined jaw line. But over the years, her face has definitely softened and caused her to look a lot more relaxed. Some people speculated plastic surgery such as a face lift, but it was actually BOTOX® injections into her masseters. This non-surgical jaw reduction or non-surgical face slimming can completely change your entire look.
When BOTOX® and Dysport® are injected precisely and directly into the masseter muscles, it temporarily relaxes that muscle and makes it weaker. This causes immediate change in the size and shape of that muscle. But with long term, consistent use of BOTOX® and Dysport® the disuse of that muscle and atrophy of the muscle will allow for less and less need for the injections.
Injections into this specific muscle cause a more square appearing jaw and chin line to become more , thinner and overall more feminine appearing. For those of use that have TMJ or stress related grinding, injections of neuromodulators such as BOTOX® and Dysport® can eliminate pain and headaches.

When doing the injections, she used very tiny needles to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Overall the in-office injections will take about 15 to 20 minutes with little to no pain, and no downtime. As with every injectable, there is a small risk of bruising, swelling and redness.
You should start noticing the results of your treatment in about two weeks. At that time Dr. Gopathi likes to reevaluate you in the office to see if more BOTOX® and Dysport® is needed. At about 6 weeks, you will see your final results as your muscles have had the time to decrease in size. This is when you can appreciate a slimmer, more feminine look to the jawline. Most results will last between 3 to 6 months. To try to prolong the effect, try to avoid chewing gum or other items that may cause that muscle to build back up and become bulky.
