Dr. Ravi Shares His Best Tips and Tricks for a Speedy Recovery After Surgery
December 31, 202012/15/2020
Recovery from plastic surgery is, at least to an extent, unique for each patient. Factors including your body’s natural healing ability, the scope of work you have had done, and how close you are willing to follow pre and postoperative instructions will all play a role in your recovery experience.
At Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, we take every possible care to ensure our patients’ recovery experiences are as easy and comfortable as possible. We will work directly with you from the moment you enter our office to make sure you have the resources and information you need for the shortest and most rewarding recovery possible.
Tips for a Speedy Recovery
First and foremost, follow all instructions. For example, if your procedure requires drains for surgical fluids, it is very important that you care for them appropriately. Improper drain care can result in fluid accumulation, infection, and pain.
If your procedure requires a compression garment, you will want to wear it as instructed. These garments can help to decrease swelling and help the body conform to its new shape. Compression garments may also limit the extent of scarring.
Rest assured, if your procedure will require aftercare like a garment or drain, we will provide you full instructions and continuing support to ensure you are prepared to use them to their full benefit.
Preparing Your Home
Make sure you have created a comfortable place to rest and recover before your procedure. Stock this area with books, magazines, and other forms of entertainment to keep yourself occupied while limiting excess movement. Be sure to have an adult around to help out with anything that may need doing at home for the first few days of recovery as well.
Drink plenty of water. Aim for at least 64 ounces a day during your recovery period. Hydration is essential for recovery.
While limiting excessive movement, you will want to take several walks every day. These can start the day of or the day after your procedure. Walks reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and can improve the pain response. Aim for getting up and moving at least once an hour for these purposes.
Even with walking, discomfort is possible following plastic surgery. Do not take OTC medications, herbal remedies, or any medications that were not specifically prescribed for your procedure. Some medications and herbs will increase bleeding risks which can lead to more visible scarring. Be honest with your level of pain. Pushing through is not a good idea. Allow yourself to be comfortable. This is, after all, a recovery. We will provide medications as needed and can work with you to establish what is appropriate for you during your follow-up visits.
Remember, it can take several weeks to recover from plastic surgery. Avoid strenuous exercise and demanding activities until you are given the go-ahead by our office. Allowing yourself to fully recover before resuming all normal activities will help prevent complications and may even work to ensure more pleasing results.
