How to Easily Get Started on Healthy, Youthful Skin

How to Easily Get Started on Healthy, Youthful Skin in Houston & Katy, TX

Published 08/17/2017

One of the most common questions I am asked by my patients every day is what they can do to achieve younger, more radiant skin. With a million skin care products available at the drugstore and cosmetics counter, trying to navigate the vast array of moisturizers, cleansers, and sunscreens feels overwhelming. To end the confusion, and simplify the process, I have put together a group of medical grade skin care products that are worth the investment in time and money.

Remember, a good skincare regimen can range from only a few items to an arsenal of products. The optimal program will depend on your personal needs and lifestyle. The most important thing is to be consistent, as even the most expensive products need time and commitment to do their job.

The first and only non-negotiable part of any skincare routine is sunscreen. Harmful effects of the sun are responsible for up to 90% of skin aging. The UVA and UVB rays in sunlight cause irreversible photodamage, with cumulative sun exposure resulting in discoloration, changes in skin texture, and unsightly sunspots. While sun damage contributes to early facial aging and wrinkles, more importantly, it also dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer.

To protect your skin, I recommend a daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Use this sunscreen on a daily basis, not just on the weekends or on vacation. Apply in the morning and then reapply the sunscreen every time you go into the sun. A personal favorite of the Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics team is Elta MD sunscreen. This innovative product glides on smoothly, without the frustrating oily finish seen in traditional, over-the-counter brands. Elta MD also comes in a handy spray-on sunscreen formula, so reapplying is a breeze.

Beginning at the age of 25, every individual should start incorporating nightly retinol. As a Vitamin A derivative, Retinol has been proven to significantly boost collagen production and increase skin cell turnover. Collagen is a vital building block of healthy skin, and levels begin to shrink after the age of 30. By adding Retinol to your daily skincare routine, fine lines and deeper wrinkles can be prevented. Retinol also has the power to decrease areas of discoloration, brightening and evening skin tone. Even better, Retinol has been shown to unclog pores, soothing skin and minimizing acne.

Unfortunately, many people try to incorporate daily retinol but find they must stop due to skin irritation and peeling. However, if the product is not used nightly, there is no proven benefit to a retinol. A revolutionary product, and the first of its kind on the aesthetic market, is SkinBetter Science Alpha Ret™. A game-changing treatment, Alpha Ret™ is a unique combination of retinoic acid and lactic acid, specifically designed to deliver the highest level of effectiveness with little to no irritation. For this reason, Alpha Ret™ is the product of choice by my patients. The non-irritating formula allows anyone to add the product to their nightly routine from the get-go.

While impossible to avoid, UV rays and pollution can cause free radicals, which will ultimately cause skin damage and speed the early signs of aging. Antioxidants have the power to neutralize these free radicals, protecting skin and slowing the signs of aging. Revision Skincare Vitamin C 30% Lotion is my antioxidant cream of choice. Offering a high concentration of THD Ascorbate, a powerful form of Vitamin C, this Revision Skincare product brings both men and women antioxidant properties that will successfully defend against persistent environmental free radicals. Not only will your face look firmer, smoother, and more youthful, Revision Skincare Vitamin C 30% Lotion will help to even the skin tone and brighten a dull complexion.

Getting started on a daily skincare routine can be as simple as adding an SPF sunscreen, Retinol, and Vitamin C antioxidant. However, depending on your age, unique skin needs, and daily routine, there are many other products that can be included for even better results. Two additional favorites that come highly recommended by Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics are SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum and Teamine Eye Cream.
