Breast Reconstruction

At the Consultation

Dr. Ravi Somayazula and your patient care coordinator will spend ample time during the initial consultation discussing the various options and techniques, tailored specifically to the needs of each individual patient. While keeping your expectations in mind, the specifics of your breast reconstruction will be planned and discussed. A thorough examination will be performed to evaluate the existing condition of your breasts. Precise measurements are taken to help Dr. Ravi Somayazula determine the optimal type of breast reconstruction surgery to recommend. He will also discuss with you which implants are the best option if undergoing implant-based breast reconstruction. He will also discuss with you the possibility of using your own abdominal or back skin and fat to reconstruct your breast. Dr. Ravi Somayazula has a great bedside manner and encourages you become thoroughly educated during the consultation in order to make a well-informed decision.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Healthy individuals who have good expectations of the results of the surgery are the ideal candidates. It is important to realize your reconstructed breast may not feel the same or have the same sensations it once did, but Dr. Ravi Somayazula is highly skilled in achieving natural-looking breast reconstruction results.

Preoperative Evaluation

All patients are seen approximately two weeks prior to surgery for their pre-operative appointment. During that visit, all surgical consents are signed, photos are taken, and a detailed informational packet is provided with specific instructions for before and after surgery. A complete list of “dos and don’ts” is also reviewed. Patients receive prescriptions for an antibiotic as well as pain and anti-nausea medications. Be prepared to follow all recommended pre-surgery and post-surgery instructions closely to ensure your best possible results.

The Surgery

There are several methods that Dr. Ravi Somayazula may recommend for restoring your breast: implant insertion, flap reconstruction, and/or tissue expansion. All operations are performed under general anesthesia at a credentialed hospital with a board certified anesthesiologist.

If you are undergoing reconstruction surgery with the flap technique, your own tissue and fat from other parts of your body (like your abdomen or back) will be used to create the new breast mound. For example, Dr. Ravi Somayazula may take excess skin and fat from your abdomen to reconstruct your breast. Depending on your specific case, your flap technique breast reconstruction can be combined with the use of breast implants in order to create your desired shape and maintain symmetry between both breasts. Flap technique breast reconstruction will require a longer recovery time than other reconstruction procedures.

Tissue expansion relies on the existing skin of your breast to stretch over your implant. While there is less recovery time and fewer incisions made around the breast, this method of breast reconstruction requires multiple visits. Dr. Ravi Somayazula will place an expander beneath your skin and inflate it over the course of several weeks to gradually stretch the skin and create room for the placement of your breast implant at a later time.

Bandages and gauzes will be placed over the incision sites, and a support bra will be given to you in order to help your reconstructed breasts heal and to minimize swelling. In case of excess blood or fluid drainage, a small tube may be placed beneath the skin. The healing process will last several weeks, during which time you will start to notice a decrease in swelling.

Each of Dr. Ravi Somayazula’s Houston breast reconstruction patients will experience different recovery periods depending on several factors, including which method of breast reconstruction was used. For example, a flap technique reconstruction often requires more downtime, but tissue expansion will require ongoing office visits. Dr. Ravi Somayazula will be available to answer any questions or concerns you may have while recovering from your breast reconstruction surgery.
