Treating Hair Loss with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Hair Restoration in Houston
Across the United States, nearly 50 million men and women are struggling with hair loss. Approximately 50% of all people will deal with non-scarring pattern hair loss, called androgenetic alopecia. Odds are, you or someone you are close to, will experience hair loss at some point in life. Half of all men are affected with hair loss by the age of 50, and by the age of 70, over 40% of women will see their hair thinning, as well. Losing your hair and showing temporal regression can be more than embarrassing; it is devastating to self-esteem.
While there are a variety of topical and oral options on the market that claim hair regrowth, these can be expensive, do little to restore a full head of hair, and can cause significant side effects. Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics’ Dr. Swapna Gopathi is excited to offer patients a scientifically proven and innovative all-natural option to prescription medications or a surgical hair transplant: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. This relatively new, non-surgical technique can provide significant results for both men and women experiencing mild to moderate hair loss and thinning.
Advantages of PRP for Hair Restoration:
- Increases blood flow to the hair follicles
- Increases the thickness of each hair shaft
- Triggers the growth phase in hair follicles
- Controls hair growth cycle, extending and maintaining the growth phase
- Slows hair loss
- No Downtime
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PRP:
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, nonsurgical method for stimulating hair growth naturally, using your body’s own plasma for tissue rejuvenation. A small amount of your blood is drawn and placed into a specific centrifuge, separating the platelets and liquid plasma from the solid components of blood. These isolated platelets have the power to pack an effective punch, full of powerful molecules and growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and epidermal growth factor (EGF). The rich plasma and vital growth factors stimulate hair follicles back into the growth phase and the existing hair grows thicker. Since the body’s own blood is used in PRP therapy, there are little to no side-effects or complications to treatment.
The PRP technique is a proven and effective treatment in aesthetic medicine, using platelets to rejuvenate the skin and speed up wound healing. Research now shows that the powerful growth factors found in blood platelets also have the power to repair cells and stimulate hair growth, ultimately slowing down the progression of alopecia. The methodology is similar to a PRP treatment used to improve wrinkles and aging skin, however to treat thinning hair, the platelet rich plasma is injected directly into scalp tissue.
THE PRP PROCEDURE:
When a patient comes into Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, a sample of blood will be drawn, very similar to that of a routine blood test. This blood will then spin in a unique centrifuge, separating the plasma rich protein from the other elements in the blood, such as the granulocytes which can slow wound healing. Separating the PRP provides a concentration of platelets many times that of normal blood values, making the final result a powerful healing tool.
Dr. Gopathi will then use a machine that blows cold air onto the scale to help with comfort. Sedation is not needed during the PRP hair restoration procedure. Finally, the concentrated PRP will be injected via tiny needles directly into the scalp. The injections are tolerable and are finished very quickly. There are no issues afterward except for possibly feeling fullness at their scalp and you are free to return to a normal daily routine.
The use of PRP in patients with alopecia can promote hair regrowth, slow hair loss, and increase hair thickness. Recent studies have shown that both men and women can see significant hair regrowth following PRP therapy, slowly increasing over six to twelve months. On average, patients will need one PRP session each month for up to six months, followed by regular maintenance sessions once to twice yearly. However, this treatment plan will depend on the individual patient. During the confidential consultation, Dr. Gopathi will outline the specific PRP hair restoration treatment plan and timeline.
