Microneedling with PRP
At Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, board certified physicians, Dr. Ravi Somayazula and Dr. Swapna Gopathi, are excited to offer their Houston, Memorial, and Katy patients a cutting-edge option for refreshing their skin and rejuvenating their appearance without surgery. Microneedling with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a game-changing technique, also known as a “Vampire Facial”, used to improve fine lines, deep wrinkles, acne scars, deep pores and dramatically reduce areas of hyperpigmentation. Best of all, medical microneedling (collagen induction therapy) requires no downtime and holds little chance for serious complications.

- Improve the appearance of scars from acne or trauma
- Softens stretch marks
- Evens skin tone
- Firms and smoothens skin texture
- Younger looking skin with a glow
The normal aging process, combined with exposure to the harsh elements, will ultimately show on many areas of the skin. Years of sun damage, pollution, chemicals, smoking, wearing makeup and genetic disposition can cause even the most cared for skin to become dry and lax. Large pores, dark spots, and areas of hyperpigmentation may form. Once these changes begin, there is no way to turn back the clock using over-the-counter lotions or serums.
What Areas of the Body Can Benefit?:
- Undereye circles, hollowness, discoloration
- Stretch marks
“At our practice, we are consistently improving patient outcomes by doing our due diligence to find the greatest breakthroughs in aesthetic advancements. I absolutely believe PRP, along with microneedling and as injections, can improve overall skin tone, structure and color.”
–Dr. Ravi Somayazula.
SKIN REJUVENATION WITH MICRONEEDLING AND PLASMA RICH PROTEIN:
Microneedling refers to a modern treatment, designed to safely create thousands of tiny, microinjuries to the skin. Using a handheld device, we provide automated microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) with twelve small needles, the microneedling applicator glides across the targeted tissue, oscillating at speeds up to 8500 revolutions per minute. These tiny insertions are perfectly placed in the skin, minimizing the chance for damage. The sterile needles are preset to a customizable length, making each session tailored to the individual patient’s needs and desired level of correction. As the skin heals, a surge of collagen and elastin will create new cells, remodel existing skin and form much needed structure. Skin will look smoother, fresher, and tighter. The benefits of treatment can continue to improve for several months.
Plasma Rich Platelets:
Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP) is derived from your own body and is a fluid containing your own platelets, stem cells and growth factors. When applied to the skin, it increases new cell turnover, expedites healing and improve the tissue’s overall health. Prepared with a small sampling of the patient’s blood, a specially designed centrifuge will separate the plasma from red and white blood cells. The PRP is then placed onto the skin during the microneedling process, allowing the concentrated platelets to sink deep into tissues for accelerated healing, ultimately making the procedure more effective. The platelets form a mesh that forms stem cells that cause eventual regeneration. By using your own body’s PRP, it is free of disease transmission and no hypersensitivity reactions.
Men and women struggling with thinning hair can see significant improvements with direct PRP injections. The high concentration of platelets and growth factors will increase the body’s tissue regeneration and stimulating the hair follicles. By maximizing hair follicles during their growth phase, the combination of microneedling and PRP can bring about significant hair restoration.

THE MICRONEEDLING CONSULTATION:
To determine if medical microneedling with PRP is right for you, a private consultation will be scheduled in the Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics’ office. Dr. Gopathi and the clinic staff will get to know your medical background, aesthetic needs, and unique desires at your initial consultation, so new patients should plan on spending up to 30 minutes at the office.
“I treat many women who are hesitant about invasive beauty procedures, now we have a great option for them with microneedling with PRP. It is a fabulous way of improving their overall skin tone, discoloration and wrinkling, without much downtime or discomfort. By concentrating and using your own stem cells and growth factors to build collagen and elastin, you can also improve dark circles and hollowing under your eyes without the use of fillers.”
– Dr. Swapna Gopathi
During the consultation, the doctor will perform a brief examination of the skin, determining the most appropriate treatment plan. Dr. Gopathi will then carefully explain microneedling and PRP, showing before/after photographs of patients who have recently had this same technique. If any additional procedures or products are recommended, Dr. Gopathi will expand on them at this time. The physicians at Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics strive to provide a patient-centered practice, always establishing realistic goals. An educated patient is the most satisfied with the treatment process.
THE MICRONEEDLING AND PRP PROCEDURE:
Our doctors perform all medical microneedling procedures in one of the Body by Ravi Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics’ comfortable, state-of-the-art treatment rooms. The procedure will generally take about an hour, depending on the individual and the target area. While a microneedling session is not considered extremely painful, the surgeons will use a topical anesthetic to maximize patient comfort.
To begin, a small amount of blood is properly removed and then the PRP is separated from other blood components by using a specialized centrifuge by Eclipse.
Next, the provider will gently apply the microneedling applicator along with the PRP across the targeted skin. As the hand piece moves over the skin, a set of twelve tiny needles, preset to the desired length, will create hundreds of small punctures in the top layer of skin. This can be adjusted as needed. At the very end, another layer of PRP will be applied to the skin.
Depending on the skin condition and the desired results, more than one microneedling session may be necessary. On average, patients will require a minimum of three microneedling treatments, each spaced six to eight weeks apart to get to their goals. Once the goal is reached, maintenance is required once every 6 months or yearly. Although we do have many patients who come in for monthly treatments because they love their improved, more youthful skin. Dr. Ravi and Dr. Gopathi will go over the number of recommended sessions during the microneedling consultation appointment.

The microneedling procedure does not require much downtime, so patients are able to return to school and normal activities the same day or the next day. Makeup can usually be reapplied in 12 to 24 hours. Every patient is different, so the recovery time will vary according to the individual and the exact treatment area. Although it is essential that people always wear sunscreen, following a microneedling treatment a high SPF sunscreen is vital to safe healing during the first seven to ten days. During the consultation appointment, and again after the procedure, the doctors will carefully explain all the recovery instructions and skincare recommendations.
Immediately after a microneedling session, the tissue may feel slightly tight, red, and tender. Pinpoint bleeding is common during the procedure but will quickly go away. Side-effects from the procedure are mild and will quickly fade. More serious complications, such as infection or scarring, are rare, especially when the treatment is performed by board-certified physicians like Dr. Gopathi.
While some patients may see an immediate change in their skin’s appearance, the full results from microneedling and PRP will take a week before they begin to show. As the skin’s collagen and elastin stores are rebuilt, the targeted tissues will become firmer and look fresher. Over the next five to six months, patients can expect to continue to see significant improvement in their appearance.

Microneedling and PRP FAQ:
What is medical microneedling?
Microneedling is a revolutionary procedure that gently creates thousands of tiny, micro-injuries to the top layers of skin, encouraging the tissue’s own healing process. As the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin get a vital kick-start, new cells will form, smoothing tissues, eliminating dark spots, and refreshing the appearance.
What is PRP?
Plasma Rich Platelets, or PRP, is a unique technique that uses the patient’s own blood to create a platelet rich source of essential growth factors. Used in conjunction with medical microneedling, Dr. Ravi and Dr. Gopathi can deliver optimal skin rejuvenation, tackling wrinkles and other early signs of aging.
How is the PRP collected?
Our doctors begin by taking a small sampling of blood from the patient, which is then passed through a specialized centrifuge. The platelets and plasma are separated. Once the PRP is processed, it will be ready for application during the microneedling procedure. It is important to be well hydrated so that the blood sample can easily be gathered from your arm.
What areas can see improvement with microneedling and PRP?
The microneedling and PRP treatment can significantly improve the health and appearance of the skin along the face, neck, arms, hands, and back. Additionally, the combined treatment can also provide an exciting option for men and women looking for hair restoration. Another area of improvement can be for dark circles and hollowness at the undereye area. During your consultation, Dr. Gopathi will discuss how many potential treatments you will need to start seeing improvement.
When can I return to work after a microneedling/PRP treatment?
Little to no downtime is required after a microneedling/PRP procedure, however this will depend on the treatment area. Many patients are comfortable returning to work the same afternoon as their microneedling session.
